Penance Back to Top Penance (Confession)

The sacrament by which sins committed after baptism are forgiven through the absolution of the priest. "Whose sins you shall forgive, they are forgiven them, and whose sins you shall retain, they are retained." (John 20:23).

Our Lord had previously promised Peter the right to forgive, saying: "And I will give thee the keys of the kingdom of Heaven; and whatever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever thou loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven" (Mt 16:19).

Confession is the telling of our sins to an authorized priest for the purpose of obtaining forgiveness.

Anointing of the Sick Back to Top Anointing of the Sick

The sacrament which through the anointing with blessed oil by the priest, and through his prayer. Gives health and strength to the soul, and sometimes to the body, when we are in danger of death from sickness, accident or old age. It was to cure the sick and console the afflicted that our Lord worked many miracles. The gospel gave us vivid pictures of Him as He went about doing good, preaching and "Healing every disease and every sickness among the people" (Mt 4:23).

When the Lord first sent out the Apostles, they "cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many sick people, and healed them" (Mk 6:13).
